S A P I E N S Lens

Our investigations branch, SAPIENS Lens, provides a podium for the Human Factor. Too often, conclusions are made in favour of cold, relatively simple, quantitative evidence. SAPIENS Lens can articulate higher-level, seemingly elusive, and deeply qualitative aspects of a complicated case, sketching a more accurate, holistic, and human-centric picture.

The reasonable (hu)man is not a figment of numbers and figures, conveniently generalised for ease of interpretation. The real human is a complex and beautifully unique combination of several aspects. The study of these aspects requires a multi-disciplinary approach, spanning several sciences, including psychology, sociology, ergonomics, engineering, physiology, and anthropology. In addition, we view our cases through the lenses of systems design, training, and management & leadership science to arrive at findings and recommendations that are practical and useful.

We have the generalist, broad, cross-disciplinary knowledge at master’s degree level in exactly those sciences. Our skills are recognised through association with the Forensics chapter at the American Human Factors and Ergonomics Society*. We provide a credible basis from where the Honourable Courts of Law, government departments, insurance companies, employers, trade unions, and families can form a rich picture: reflecting the real, authentic human in an environment that is increasingly digital, hostile, and unforgiving.

Our reports on incidents and accidents aim to provide clarity in ambiguity, meaning in chaos and most importantly: a qualitative solution to a quantitative problem. We help judges, arbitrators, mediators, assessors, and decision-makers to connect the dots and form a true picture, as close as possible to the real truth. Our findings and recommendations are based on real-world experience, honed in the aviation industry where humans interface with complex systems in a highly dynamic environment. We contemplate the Human Factor in all its strengths and limitations, as an integral part of the holistic safety system, which include hardware, the environment, and fellow humans.

We help others to also see through your lens. The SAPIENS lens.
